  • Capsules with slight or no odor.
  • Spilled material may create slipping hazard.
  • Can burn in a fire creating dense toxic smoke depending on resin used.
  • Molten plastic can cause severe thermal burns.
  • Fumes produced during melt processing may cause eye, skin, and respiratory tract irritation.  Severe over-exposure may result in nausea, headache, chills, and fever.
  • Secondary operations, such as grinding, sanding, or sawing can produce dust which may present an explosion or respiratory hazard.

Potential Health Effects: Effects of Overexposure

Inhalation Dust and fumes may irritate eyes and respiratory tract.  Secondary operations which generate dust and/or fumes from the conductive dopants, when inhaled in high concentration, may cause metal fume fever characterized by a metallic taste in the mouth, dryness and irritation of the throat and influenza-like symptoms.  Chronic inhalation of high concentrations of conductive dopant fumes or dust may contribute to additional health hazards and should be avoided.
Ingestion No hazard in normal industrial use.  Ingestion may cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, metallic taste, and diarrhea.  Ingestion in large doses may cause stomach and intestine ulceration, jaundice, and kidney and liver damage.
Skin Absorption No absorption hazard anticipated in normal industrial use.
Eye Contact Can cause mechanical irritation if dusts are generated.  Vapors may irritate eyes.  It is good industrial practice to minimize eye contact.  ANSI approved safety glasses are recommended.
Skin Contact Contact with exterior of pellet at room temperature unlikely to cause irritation even on repeated contact.  Contact with conductive dopants may cause skin irritation due to mechanical irritation of small particles.  Symptoms include redness and itching or greenish-black skin discoloration.  Under normal processing conditions, material is heated to elevated temperatures; contact with heated material may cause thermal burns.  It is recommended that gloves be worn.

4. First Aid Measures

Inhalation Processing fumes or dust inhalation may be irritating to the respiratory tract.  If symptoms are experienced remove person from the source of contamination, provide person with fresh air and obtain medical advice.
Skin Contact Wash with soap and water.  Obtain medical attention if irritation develops or persists.  For hot product, immediately immerse in cold water or flush affected area with large amounts of cold running water to dissipate heat.  Do not apply ice.  Cover with clean cotton sheeting or gauze and get prompt medical attention.  Do not attempt to remove molten material from skin.  Removal could cause severe tissue damage.Note to Physician: Treat burns as any thermal burn after decontamination.  No specific antidote.
Eye Contact Flush eyes immediately and thoroughly with water.  Obtain medical attention in irritation develops or persists.  After initial flushing, remove contact lenses if present then flush with water again.
Ingestion Do not induce vomiting.  Seek medical attention if symptoms develop.

Fire Fighting Do not enter fire area without proper protection including self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective equipment.  Fight fire from a safe distance and a protected location due to the potential of hazardous vapors and decomposition products.

6. Accidential Release Measures

General Pellets may present a slipping hazard.  Keep out of irrigation ditches, sewers, and waterways.  Gather and store in a closed container pending a waste disposal evaluation.  Avoid causing dust.  Allow molten material to solidify before disposal.

7. Handling and Storage

Handling Prevent contact with skin and eyes.  Use good industrial hygiene practices.  Provide adequate ventilation.  Secondary operations such as grinding, sanding, or sawing may produce a dust explosion hazard.  Use aggressive housekeeping activities to prevent dust accumulation: employ bonding, grounding, venting, and explosion relief provision s in accordance with accepted engineering practices.  If conductive dopants are separated from pellets, airborne particles can short-circuit electrical equipment; take measures to contain conductive dopants.
Ingestion Store in a cool, dry place.  Keep container sealed.  Avoid excessive heat and ignition sources.

8. Exposure Controls / Personal Protection

Engineering Controls A continuous supply of fresh air to the workplace together with removal of processing fumes through exhaust systems is recommended.  Processing fume condensate may be a fire hazard and toxic; remove condensate periodically from exhaust hoods, ductwork, and other surfaces using appropriate personal protection.  Local ventilation requirements must be determined to limit exposure to processing fumes in the workplace.

Wear safety glasses with side shields or chemical goggles.  In addition, use full-face shield when cleaning processing fume condensates from hoods, ducts, and other surfaces.When handling pellets, avoid prolonged or repeated contact with skin.  Wear long pants, long sleeves, well insulated gloves, boots, and a face shield during melt processing.  Appropriate clothing – including chemical resistant gloves – should be worn to prevent contact with processing fumes condensate. When using product at elevated temperatures, implement engineering systems, administrative controls, or a respiratory protection programs (including a respirator approved for protection from organic vapors, acid gases, and particulate matter) if processing fumes are not adequately controlled or operators experience symptoms of overexposure.  If dust or powder is produced from secondary operations such as sawing or grinding, use a respirator approved for protection from dust.

Reactivity Not reactive under recommended conditions of handling, storage, processing, and use.
Conditions to Avoid Do not exceed melt temperature recommendations in resin-supplier product literature for this resin.  In order to avoid auto-ignition / hazardous decomposition of hot thick masses of plastic, purgings should be collected in small, flat shapes or thin strands to allow for rapid cooling.  Quench in water.  Do not allow products to remain in barrel at elevated temperatures for extended periods of time: purge with a general purpose resin. (See respiratory protection advice in Section 8.)
Hazardous Decomposition Products Processing fumes evolved at recommended processing conditions may include a large variety of organic and inorganic products depending on product grade, temperature and other immediate environmental factors.

Acute Health Hazards

Eye Contact Product not considered a primary eye irritant.  Secondary operations such as grinding tend to generate small particles which are expected to be abrasive.  Eye protection is advised.
Skin Contact Products not considered a primary skin irritant.  However, good industrial hygiene practices should be followed in handling and processing this product.

13. Disposal Information

Waste Disposal Recycling is encouraged; this product is suitable for mechanical recycling.  Mechanical recycling is possible after material has been selectively retrieved and carefully segregated according to type.  After appropriate treatment product can be molded and reprocessed into new molded pieces.  Disposal in landfill or incineration must be in compliance with federal, state and local requirements.  Collected processing fume condensates and incinerator ash should be tested to determine waste classification.
